What’s In YOUR Memory?

Earliest memory I have?  Being held by an old lady at church with my mom standing close by. The lighting was orange.  I did not want this white haired lady to hold me.

I guess that was the earliest memory I have.  Though I remember the day my mom went to the hospital to deliver my brother.  I was three.  My grandma told me not to be jealous of the new baby.  Jealous?  What’s that?

A couple weeks ago, I met a woman who is 103 years old.  She lives independently, has her wits about her, walks on her own accord.  I would say, most of the really old people I meet are positive & peaceful.  And wise, very wise.  Can you imagine all the memories a person like that has stored up?  What has she been through?  We think we are living in hard times now.  My generation in general, and the most certainly the ones that follow behind, has been pampered.  We know very little about self sacrifice and horrendous hardship.  I would love to talk to this lady, who has lived over 100 years, who still retains an eastern European accent.  What are the most joyous memories, what are the most grievous?  I have a feeling she could tell me.

I need to start playing Sudoku again because my memory is fried.  And I’m only 33 years old – I think.  I’m starting to lose track.  The other day my kids had off of school.  I forgot this, as we were sitting in the car waiting for the bus to arrive.  I called work to let them know the bus was running late, fuming curse words inside my head.  “Emily, honey, the bus won’t be there.  The kids have off of school.”  My friend/receptionist told me as she laughed.  Oh.

I will not see 100.  I just can’t imagine it.  I’m too much a realist (no sir, I’m not a pessimist!) to reach much beyond the 7th decade.  I think my little brother has a good chance of it though.  He is a much more positive thinker than I.  He can have old age.  Grandma, I’m not jealous of that.

What’s your earliest memory?

  1. My earliest memory is when I was 3 or 4 and my dad blew up a army raft and I used it for a swimming pool!!! That was awesome!! My daddy was the greatest in the world!!!

    • Hi mom! You know, rafts are one thing that hasn’t been replaced by something more technologically advanced. How cool is it that Grandpa knew how fun it would be for you to play with? Thanks for sharing your memory mom!

  2. Sisterinsane, this was a fun post to read! First, you will probably see 100 just because you are in doubt that you will! Ha…funny how things unfold….that is the beauty of life….and our memories.
I have so many memories, especially now thinking back to my mother. The one that comes to mind- having to sit through the “horse diving show” in New Jersey every year at the beach. It was a must for my mother, the entertainment on the Jersey boardwalk…. I’m laughing now as I type this. My mother never could have guessed that her youngest would turn out to be an advocate for animals! A diving horse, now that is just odd! Anyhow, you now have me thinking of so many memories….. thank you my friend….. thanks for sharing and posting your memories…and your mother! : ) (*sorry…this turned into a mini post)
